All staff at the Cardiology Medical Group must have first aid training to assist them in dealing with medical emergencies. This training includes CPR and the operation of emergency resuscitation equipment.
If patient or visitor presents to you in an injured or distressed state or collapses in front of you, do the following:
1. Remain calm, and give your undivided attention to the patient.
2. Place the patient in a comfortable position. If possible, move them to the medical emergency room.
3. Observe the patient’s condition carefully, and rapidly assess the severity of the situation.
4. If the situation appears life threatening, announce “Code Blue” over the PA system.
5. If a physician is unavailable, call 911 for an ambulance. For more information, see Transfer of Patient to Ambulance.
6. Give appropriate first aid until medical assistance arrives.
7. Keep uninvolved personnel away.
